Tick, Tick... BOOM: For Your Reconsideration

Dear The Academy,

I am writing today to inform you of a critical error made in your recent release of the 94th Annual Academy Awards list of nominees. First of all, Lady Gaga was robbed after how hard she WORKED that press tour. But most pressingly, you have nominated the wrong Tick, Tick… BOOM!

The new Netflix film adaptation of this beloved musical is a contender in the next Oscar pool. And, yes, I’ve seen the film. It’s very cute. Quaint, even. However, does it hold a candle to the sheer magic currently taking place on Suydam street this very weekend?

I think not.

I dare say that this heartfelt, explosive, energy-packed rendition of the autobiographic is even more thrilling. As the annual Special Project of Cabaret Theatre 2021-2022 season, Tick, Tick… BOOM! has all the makings of main stage Cab musical in a fraction of the time. Its team was only given five weeks to put it all together. But they didn’t let that keep them from pulling out all the stops. With a cast of all freshfaced newcomers to the Cabaret musical stage, you can feel the excited pulse run through all 90 minutes of the show.

So, The Academy, in the face of your failure I’m willing to set things right.

I present to you, The Special Centenary Katie Toledo Academy Awards

Best Jonathan Larson: Daphne Sardis

Daphne Sardis (Jon) doing what Andrew Garfield couldn’t

Naturally, we’ll start with the obvious. How can you look at that face and not want to fund their weird scifi musical?

Best Undercover Triple Threat: Lily Mollicone

Lily Mollicone, who plays Michael, (left) and Daphne Sardis (right) being adorable

Michael can fan kick?!

Greenest Green Green Dress: Tick, Tick… BOOM costume team, probably Forever 21, and Christina Wuenn

Christina Wuenn, who plays Susan, (left) and Daphne (right) looking deep into each others eyes. Bonus chemistry award for them.

I will concede that this dress may not be Oscar-worthy, but Christina works it like it is.

Spiciest Sugar: Kitana Sultan

Daphne (left) watching as Ben Kritz (center) and Kitana Sultan (right) embody their numerous hilarious roles in the show

Oh, you don’t get this one? I guess you gotta see the show.

Best Director: Uchenna Agbu (Honorable Mention: Lin-Manuel Miranda because he was robbed)

Uchenna Agbu (left), stage and screen’s Lin-Manuel Miranda (right). I know you needed that distinction.

Uchenna and Lin both burst onto the scene in phenomenal directorial debuts this year. Uchenna’s was just better.

I am seeking official certified acknowledgement verifying the The Special Centenary Katie Toledo Academy Awards as legitimate and $100,000. Your move, The Academy.

Kisses,
Katie
